PATIENT INFORMATION

Senior Woman With Nurse

Initial Consultation

Following GP referral or self-referral, you can usually be seen within 3-4 days of contacting the clinic. Where an urgent appointment is required, every effort will be made for the consultant to see you as soon as possible.

On the day of your appointment, you will meet with the consultant who will take a detailed clinical history of your symptoms and any other relevant information including a detailed past medical and surgical history and list of medications. A physical examination will ensue, which will include a detailed examination of the anal canal and rectum, and potentially a direct internal visualisation with a proctoscope (short plastic tube). The consultant will then explain what may be causing your symptoms and offer you treatments or arrange any further investigations that may be necessary. The initial consultation and examination usually lasts 20 minutes.

The investigations that may be required can include a flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. These procedures involve an examination of the lining of the colon (large bowel) using a thin flexible, tube-like telescope. If either of these are necessary, they can usually be arranged for you within a week of the consultation.

If any treatments are needed for your condition, the consultant will go through the different treatment options in detail and allow you to make an informed decision. Treatments are usually arranged within two weeks of the consultation. On the day of the treatment, the procedure will be discussed again in detail. Most treatments are day case procedures with no overnight stay.

After your investigations or any treatments you will normally be seen back in the clinic. Follow up consultations may involve a further examination and normally last 10 minutes.
